Is Bettys Tea Room Closing down?
In spring 2021 we made the difficult decision to close the first-floor café at our Little Bettys branch in York while keeping the ground floor shop open. In the autumn, with a heavy heart, we took the further decision to close the shop and with it the branch.
Why is Bettys Tea Room Famous?
A tearoom that has become a Yorkshire institution is celebrating its 100th birthday. Bettys opened its doors in Harrogate in the aftermath of the World War One and has been serving tea and cakes ever since. A century on, the firm now boasts six cafes around the county.

Since we offer a walk up experience in our Café Tea Rooms, you do not book ahead. Simply pop by on the day and we will seat you and your party. Afternoon Tea in the Imperial and Belmont Rooms is bookings-only and only available in our Harrogate and York Café Tea Rooms.
Why is Bettys closing in York?
THE MANAGING director of Bettys has revealed that the famous Yorkshire company is having to close one of its tearooms which has placed dozens of jobs at risk. The café on Stonegate in the centre of York will not re-open after the branch has been deemed to be no longer financially viable.

How long has Bettys been in York?
Mostly though, we think he’d feel proud. Proud that the little café business that he founded on 17th July 1919 is still here, 100 years later, bearing the name ‘Bettys’ over the door.
Does Bettys have a dress code?
The comfort of our guests is our priority, so there is no formal dress code.
Can I book a table at Bettys York?
We don’t take bookings in our main Café Tea Rooms in Harrogate, York, Northallerton, Ilkley, or Harlow Carr. If you or your guests need a chair while waiting, let a member of our staff know and they will be more than happy to help.
