Do you have to wear a mask at Starved Rock?
Guests and employees of Starved Rock Lodge are no longer required to wear a mask. Please be respectful of anyone who chooses to wear a mask for their own protection. On February 28, 2022, Governor Pritzker signed Executive Order 2022-06 lifting the mask requirement in most indoor settings.
Does it cost anything to go to Starved Rock State Park?
A: There is no entrance fee to enter the park or for parking. Parking is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Is Starved Rock still closed?
Starved Rock State Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Center is open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. The movie theater is temporarily unavailable. Closed on Federal Holidays.

What do you wear to Starved Rock?
Kids really like to play in the waterfalls and pools underneath them at Starved Rock. However, hiking in wet pants and soaked socks is not fun. If you think your kids will want to splash, bring a change of clothes. And if you have water shoes, bring them too.

Visitors may park in the Starved Rock overflow lot, though only 300 parking spaces are available. The parking lot near the Starved Rock Lodge will be restricted to lodge patrons with reservations.

The best time to visit Starved Rock State Park for spotting the eagles is in January and February. The most comfortable weather conditions can be experienced between April and September. However, Starved Rock is a magical year-round destination for hiking and sightseeing.
How do I spend a day at Starved Rock?
Hiking through these canyons and along the scenic overlooks on the Illinois River are the best ways to see this park. The well-maintained paths, many with wooden stairs and boardwalks, make these hiking trails substantially more accessible for non-hikers.
How early should I get to Starved Rock?
It’s not a secret that Starved Rock is a great destination, and it often attracts a large number of people, particularly on pretty days. Get there early if at all possible. (Trails opens at sunrise, the park opens at 7 a.m.) It’s also cooler in the morning, and beating both the heat and the crowds is a win-win.
What should I bring to Starved Rock?
Here are a few of my tips for visiting Starved Rock:
- Get there early—both to beat the heat and the crowds!
- Bring plenty of water and maybe some snacks (especially in summer).
- Wear appropriate clothes and shoes.
- The vast majority of trails are not stroller or wheelchair accessible.

The Le Rocher Gift Shop is quite special and unique because it is operated and owned by the Starved Rock Foundation which is the non for profit friends group of the state park.

What is not allowed in Starved Rock State Park?
No Swimming in park waterfalls, creeks, or the Illinois River. Rock Climbing/rappelling is not allowed anywhere in the park. Bicycles, scooters, skates, and skateboards are not allowed on the trails at Starved Rock State Park. Drones are not allowed at either park.

As of August 2021 MASKS are REQUIRED to enter any state park building such as the restrooms, Lodge, or Starved Rock Visitor Center regardless of vaccination status. The Visitor Center exhibit hall, park office, and information desk are open Monday through Sunday from 9-4.
