What is a therapeutic touch massage?
In Therapeutic Touch, therapists place their hands on or near their patient’s body with the intention to help or heal. In doing so, therapists believe that they are consciously directing or modulating an individual’s energies by interacting with his or her energy field.
What’s the difference between therapeutic touch and healing touch?
In Healing Touch (HT) the practitioner does not actually have physical contact the patient but positions the hands above different parts of the body with the intention of facilitating healing. In contrast, in Therapeutic Touch (TT) the practitioner uses gentle touch.
What are the steps in therapeutic touch?
Therapeutic touch involves five elements
- Centering. Bringing the body, mind, and emotions to a quiet, focused state of consciousness.
- Assessing.
- Unruffling (also called clearing).
- Treatment (also called balancing, rebalancing intervention).
- Evaluation.
What does Craniosacral therapy do?
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle hands-on technique that uses a light touch to examine membranes and movement of the fluids in and around the central nervous system. Relieving tension in the central nervous system promotes a feeling of well-being by eliminating pain and boosting health and immunity.
Can therapists touch their clients?
Sexual contact of any kind between a therapist and a client is unethical and illegal in the State of California.
What is Reiki and healing touch?
Reiki is a non-invasive Japanese touch therapy. It helps the body heal by removing blocks in the body’s energy field, aligning and balancing the body’s energy centers, and straightening the body’s energy pathways. Reiki is administered by a softer touch than the deep pressure of massage.
What happens in a healing touch session?
S/he will then gently touch your body or place her/his hands slightly above your body as s/he restores and balances the energy system. The session may last between 15 and 60 minutes. You can ask questions before or after a treatment. It may be helpful to receive several Healing Touch sessions.
How effective is therapeutic touch?
Most studies indicate that therapeutic touch can relieve tension headaches and reduce pain, such as pain associated with burns, osteoarthritis, or following surgery. It may also speed wound healing and improve function in those with arthritis. In fact, studies show that therapeutic touch stimulates cell growth.
Is therapeutic touch legit?
There is no good medical evidence for the effectiveness of therapeutic touch. A Cochrane systematic review, first published in 2004, found “[t]here is no robust evidence that TT promotes healing of acute wounds”, but in 2016 the authors retracted it after the validity of the reviewed studies were questioned.
What is self-touch and how can it help you?
The empowering thing is that self-touch is a resource that many of us have access to — even if we only have the ability to close our eyes while we notice our internal sensations, like our eyelids coming together or the air moving into our lungs. Remember to take a moment to breathe and self-soothe, if only for a few minutes.

I developed Touch Therapy™ to provide safe and nurturing touch for survivors of abuse in the form of massage therapy. It is a requirement that survivors of abuse who want this work must have been in psychotherapy or currently in psychotherapy to receive this work.
